And… Exhale
Returning to the studio after 12 months away was a huge transition for my family and I. Being that this was the first artwork I started, it felt like it weighed a ton. Of course I was hoping that the first work to come through wouldn’t just be successful, but a strong piece. Little did I know then the ride it would take me on…
Without having any plan before I started painting, I was in my local art store collecting some extra materials I needed to start work, when I came across an artwork in the store, it was a print for sale of an elephant, painted in a range of blue hues, metallic gold, deep purples and dusky pink. The colour pallet caught my attention, I took it as a sign and decided to reflect on that work as the inspiration for this first piece - it was a risky move, unlike any other work I’ve produced before or since and I felt the pressure of that decision, along side this being the first work, in my brand new studio.
The creation of the piece held a similar energy. I wrestled with the layers which came through at first, it felt out of balance and too loud. in turn I tried to remedy the work, transforming it dramatically half-way-through painting. initially I thought that the work was lost, I’d taken it too far away from what I had envisioned but with time, and a lot of observation and thought, I found a way out of the mess I had created.
Eventually, after several days of hand-painting specific tiny, details - the paint had dried, the last layer of resin was poured and I fell completely in love with what the work had come to be.
This piece represents the rewards which come from pushing through our discomfort, it represents dedication, discipline and ultimately the relief which, in time, transforms the tension we often feel in life.
This is ‘And… Exhale’ - Proudly my first work for 2026.
