Biography
Mitch Gobel (b. 1990) is an Australian abstract artist based in the Northern Rivers of NSW. Raised on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, his work draws from the emotional and atmospheric qualities of the natural landscape.
Working primarily with resin, pigments and industrial materials, Gobel builds compositions through successive layers applied before the mediums begin to cure. Through this process pigments shift, repel and settle organically across the surface, producing fluid movements that balance intention with chance. Encased in resin, these moments are suspended in time, creating works that suggest continual movement beneath a still surface.
Inspired by natural processes such as erosion, growth and decay, Gobel’s practice explores the tension between control and surrender. Colours merge and dissolve into one another, blurring the distinction between beginning and end while echoing the quiet intelligence of natural systems.
After briefly expanding his practice into acrylic and oil painting in 2022, Gobel returned to resin in 2025 with renewed focus, establishing a dedicated warehouse studio and recommitting to full-time making.
His work is held in private collections in over 60 countries, with a strong audience across Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom.
